Basic Food Groups

Four kinds of foods are considered basic to meet nutritional needs :
  1. Milk and milk product
  2. Meat or meat equivalents
  3. Fruits and vegetables
  4. Grain (bread and cereals)
Milk group provides calsium, protein, riboflavin, vitamin B6, vitamin B12.
Meat group provides protein, niacin, thiamin, iron, zinc, vitamin B12
Fruit and vegetables provides vitamin A, vitamin C, folic acid. Because of their high water and high fibre content, most fruit and vagetables are relatively low in calories
Grain provides thiamin, niacin, iron, protein. All grain products are include in this group wether they are made from whole, refined and enriched orfortified grains.
